What is hay fever? Hay fever is also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis and as with all allergies, the symptoms occur as a result of an over-reactive immune system. In this case, it reacts with pollen, a substance most people find absolutely harmless. However, when a hayfever sufferer encounters pollen, cells in the lining of their eyes, nose and mouth release a chemical called histamine. This triggerss the symptoms of an allergic reaction, which can be many and varied, depending on the type of pollen they’re allergic to.
What are the symptoms of hayfever?
• The most common symptoms are a runny and itchy nose, incessant sneezing, blocked nose, irritating, very itchy and watery red eyes, and very often, an itchy throat. Sometimes it’s not all of these, but when it is, it can easily result in time off work.
• Some less common symptoms include headache, pain in the facial area, sweating and on some occasions, loss of smell.
• Also, if you are also an asthma sufferer, your symtoms could very well worsen. Indeed, some asthma suffers only suffer during the hayfever season, so when is this?.
When do you get hay fever?
March to September can see increased pollen levels, but the absolute misery for most victims is when the pollen count is at it’s highest, which is usually from end of May until the end of July. This is because this is the time when grass and flowers are in pollen, and it’s these pollen which affect most people. For many millions of people, that most treasured of summer noises, the sound of the lawnmower, spells misery and depression. Hay fever in autumn is far more rare, as it is usually caused by weeds. These can include nettles etc.
