Antihistamine drugs can quite often leave people feeling sleepy or over stimulated, so what natural products can work just as well without those side effects? One of the natural supplements which have proved effective in clinical trials is Quercetin. Quercetin is a bioflavonoid, which holds properties to act as natural anti-histamine. It helps to stabilize the cell membranes and stop them from producing the inflammatory effects you get when an allergic reaction occurs.

It is an allergic condition that the immune system triggers in the response to inhaling plant pollens and fungal spores. Studies have still to show why some individual’s immune systems over respond to the inhalation of plant pollen and fungal spores. Studies have shown a rise in people suffering from hay fever in the cities compared to those living in the countryside, so there may be a link to pollution making the symptoms of hay fever worst.

Hay fever signs and symptoms include: headache, runny nose, itchy watery eyes, sneezing and a sore throat. If these symptoms become severe enough you should talk to your doctor. He may be able to recommend over-the-counter allergy medicine. If these don’t work, ask about getting a prescription. In many cases people would rather avoid medication. The good news is that there are several natural hay fever remedies that are simple and easy to use. Most of these treatments revolve around avoidance.

The second type is non allergic asthma, or intrinsic asthma, of which doctors do not really know the causes because there is no history of the disease in your family, and you do not seem to be allergic to anything. In either case your asthma may be mild, moderate or severe, and if it has been going on a long time it is chronic. Then there is brittle asthma, which is very rare, where you may have a sudden attack, usually brought on by an allergy, which comes out of the blue and is difficult to control. Finally, there is night time or nocturnal asthma.

Seasonal hay fever is triggered by tree pollen, grasses or weeds and other plants. Year-round symptoms can occur if you have indoor allergy to dust mites, cockroaches, mold or pet dander. Mild hay fever symptoms can be managed effectively with over-the-counter medications. Year-round symptoms or severe seasonal hay fever symptoms may require an allergy specialist for appropriate evaluation and treatment. My year-round allergy symptoms are managed effectively by an internist. An internist is a physician who specializes in adult diseases.

Some of the most common allergy symptoms occur for the seasonal allergies such as hay fever and include the itchy watery eyes, runny nose, and sneezing aspects of allergenic symptoms. Other cases of allergies feature more serious symptoms that can be more harmful and troublesome such as absentmindedness, dizziness, trouble swallowing, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, skin rashes, vertigo, vomiting, and other serious cases of health issues that may spring from how the body deals with the allergen itself.

You will usually experience the symptoms of hay fever within 5 weeks after an untreated strep throat infection. The common symptoms of rheumatic fever include shortness of breath, painful and swollen joints, and chest pain. You might also end up suffering from skin rash on your chest, back and stomach. All these symptoms rheumatic fever are in addition to the symptoms strep throat which might also be present when you get rheumatic fever.

But if you have an allergy, the body sends out too many antibodies, which then attack the allergen and the body’s own tissue, causing the usual hay fever symptoms of runny nose, itchy eyes, sinus pressure.

In order to alleviate this problem it is best to avoid whatever is causing your allergy. Of course, this is not always possible.

The usual medications that are recommended only work for a short time. They only alleviate the symptoms, they don’t go to the core of the problem. Allergy shots are the same. They may work for one allergy season, but not for the next.

Natural remedies are much safer, and often go to the root of the problem, fixing the underlying cause of the body’s over reaction in the first place.

There are several herbs that help with hay fever.

Nettles has been a longtime favorite. It contains many vitamins and minerals that help the body overcome the allergy

Leeks and green onions are also excellent. You can make leeks and green onion soup. This will go a long way toward helping alleviate your symptoms.

Cayenne pepper. This herb is very hot, and if you can tolerate it, is excellent for almost any allergy or illness. It contains many vitamins and minerals which are circulated throughout the blood stream. One of the best ways to cool off after taking cayenne, is to drink a glass of cold milk.

Elder flowers is another herb that’s very helpful

Hay Fever Symptoms And Treatment Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is a common allergic response to specific substances in your environment. Hay fever is one of the most common allergic conditions in the United States.

Without proper treatment of hay fever symptoms there can be an increase of more allergic conditions such as asthma or eczema. Uncontrolled hay fever symptoms will impair the quality of your everyday life.

Hay fever symptoms include:

Runny nose
Watery nose
Congestion
Frequent sneezing
Itchy eyes, nose, roof of mouth or throat
Swollen, blue-colored skin under eyes
Postnasal drip
Cough
Sleeplessness
Fatigue
Irritability
Facial pressure and pain

Hay fever symptoms are similar to the symptoms of a common cold, however, there are differences. Hay fever does not mean you are allergic to hay and is not triggered by hay. It does not cause a fever. The probable cause is an allergic reaction to pollen or mold. Heredity plays a role in determining who becomes allergic including hay fever. If allergies or asthma runs in your family, you may be more likely to develop hay fever.

You are most likely to develop hay fever during childhood or early adulthood, but it can begin at any age. As you get older, symptoms may worsen or improve. I have noticed my hay fever seems to be diminishing; however, this could also be due to better allergy medication.

Treatment for hay fever symptoms:

Your doctor will identify what allergy triggers your symptoms and then develop a plan to avoid and/or cope with those substances. Review the following treatment options:

Nasal corticosteroids sprays

Antihistamines relieve itching, sneezing and runny nose. Common antihistamines include Benadryl, Chlor-Trimeton, Tavist, Claritin

Decongestants are often used in combination with antihistamines and include Sudafed, Actifed

Cromolyn sodium helps relieve hay fever symptoms by preventing the release of histamine.

Leukotriene modifier: A prescription tablet taken to block the action of leukotrienes

Nasal atropine helps relieve a severe runny nose

It is important to talk to your doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications for hay fever especially if you have a chronic health condition that requires you to take other prescription drugs. You will need to know whether or not there could be a drug interaction or other adverse effect.

I will never forget the time I was seeing an internist for an upper respiratory problem, who prescribed a medication that if taken with other medications I was on could have caused an instant fatal heart attack. The pharmacist is the one who warned me of this. It is important to stay alert when taking several different kinds of medications. It is not always the doctor who can give or who gives you all the medicine’s side effects. A good pharmacist has a wealth of knowledge about drugs and their interactions with each other. Make it a practice to always ask your pharmacist about side effects and interactions as well as your doctor. I did change internist after that incident and was then diagnosed correctly and given the appropriate medications for my hay fever symptoms.

If medications do not relieve your hay fever symptoms, your doctor may recommend allergy shot therapy. The goal of immunotherapy or desensitization therapy is to desensitize you to specific allergens, reduce your signs and symptoms, and decrease your need for medications. Allergy shots are usually given over a period of three to five years to reach this goal.

With the arrival of allergy season, more than 26 million allergy sufferers prepare for the sneezing and congestion that accompanies hay fever. But are their remedies up to the challenge?

An allergic condition, hay fever results from exposure to substances in the air, like pollen, which cause cells in the human immune system to release histamine causing an allergic reaction.

As a result, people experience itching in the nose, roof of the mouth, eyes and throat. Other symptoms include tearing, sneezing, and clear, watery nasal discharge, headaches and irritability.

In the spring, tree pollen is the prime culprit triggering hay fever and can start to be a problem as early as February. However, ragweed, a yellow flowering weed that grows particularly well in dry, hot areas, is the No. 1 cause of hay fever symptoms. Ragweed season begins mid-August and runs through November, or until the first frost, in the majority of the country.

"Regardless of the $4 billion spent on allergy products in our country, allergy sufferers are still experiencing the symptoms and not finding relief," said Terry Lemerond, founder and president of EuroPharma, a leading provider of natural health products. "To make matters worse, many over-the-counter and prescription allergy remedies are accompanied by annoying and sometimes dangerous side effects."

Recently, EuroPharma introduced SneezEze, an alternative that could change the way you treat your allergies. SneezEze is an all-natural product that delivers a fine mist of powder into the nasal passages where it relieves allergy and hay fever symptoms.

Recently introduced in the United States, the product has been used by millions in Europe for more than 10 years. Unlike traditional allergy drugs which only temporarily relieve symptoms, SneezEze works with the body’s own defense mechanisms to relieve symptoms and restore your nose to a normal, healthy state, Lemerond said.

"Every day, we breathe in an amazing 20 billion particles and our nose simply cannot keep up," said Mandy Kraynik, a medical microbiologist and immunologist with EuroPharma. "SneezEze helps to support the nasal tract by relieving the symptoms caused by allergens."

According to EuroPharma, SneezEze is non-habit forming and non-drowsy and, with just one application daily, can relieve symptoms for up to 24 hours.

Hay fever has been given many different names such as allergic rhinitis, pollinosis or nasal allergies. You can contract hay fever due to certain air borne dust particles exposed in the environment. These dust particles can be pollen, dander which can cause allergic reaction. Hay fever problem mainly begins from surroundings by which anyone can be affected. Staying away, from any of the allergy triggering factors is the best solution. Even though in this condition you do not have any fever it is still called hay fever.

For hayfever, sometimes your eyes get itchy just make black tea and put it in the fridge make it quite cold , keep on dipping the cotton wool in the tea and put it on your eyes,You will feel fresh and relaxed.

Apple Cider Vinegar and Hayfever - This ailment is marked by watery eyes, sneezing and running nose, in other words there is an excess of fluid which the body is drastically trying to offload. For an effective relief, honey and cider vinegar should be utilized which will bring excellent results. A tablespoonful of honey should be taken after each meal for approximately a fortnight before the onset of the hay-fever season. The ordinary dosage of cider vinegar and honey should then be taken viz: two teaspoons of cider vinegar and two of honey in a glass of water, three times a day. This dosage should be maintained during the entire hay-fever season.

There may be sneezing, sinus pressure and facial pain especially around the eyes nose and forehead, swollen allergic shiners which is blue-colored skin under the eyes, runny nose and nasal congestion and watery or itchy eyes.

The symptoms can be disruptive enough to have a negative impact like fatigue, irritability and sleeplessness. These symptoms can also be triggered by things like grass, tree pollen, weeds, cockroaches and mold.

For hayfever, sometimes your eyes get itchy just make black tea and put it in the fridge make it quite cold , keep on dipping the cotton wool in the tea and put it on your eyes,You will feel fresh and relaxed.
They significantly altered levels of antibodies such as IgE and IgG - which are linked to allergic reactions including sneezing, itchy eyes and a runny nose. ‘The probiotic strain we tested changed the way the body’s immune cells respond to grass pollen, restoring a more balanced immune response.’ said Dr Kamal Ivory, a senior researcher at the Institute of Food Research.

Stay away from melon. Having hay fever can make you more prone to food allergies. Researchers note that many people seem to have an allergic-like reaction after eating certain foods–what’s called cross-reactivity. For instance, those allergic to ragweed often experience cross-reactive symptoms when they eat watermelon, cantaloupe or honeydew. And those with birch tree-pollen allergies sometimes react to cherries, apples, pears, peaches, carrots and potatoes. Herbal teas may also produce an adverse reaction in some people.
Avoid going out early in the morning or late in the evening. At this time pollen count in air is comparatively more. Avoid using nasal spray continuously for three days. It may increase congestion of nose. Avoid smoking and air pollutants.

Hay fever is caused by windborne substances like pollen and ragweed. The allergy is caused by an over reaction to these substances. Usually, the body sends out antibodies to fight off the offending invaders and the amount of antibodies sent is usually proportional to the amount of damage.

One of the best ways to cool off after taking cayenne, is to drink a glass of cold milk

Almost everyone has an idea of what an allergy is. Allergies are so common, in fact, that it seems acceptable to discuss allergy symptoms at a cocktail party with perfect strangers.

An allergy is an abnormal reaction by a person’s immune system to a normally harmless substance. A person without allergies would have no reaction to this substance, but when a person who is allergic encounters the trigger, the body reacts by releasing chemicals which cause allergy symptoms.

In children, allergic disease first occurs as atopic dermatitis (eczema) or food allergies. Children with atopic dermatitis are then at an increased risk of developing allergic rhinitis and asthma; both are more likely to occur in school-age children.

Typically, atopic dermatitis goes away by adulthood, as do many types of food allergies.

Allergic rhinitis and asthma, however, most often start during the adolescent, teenage and young adult years, and are likely to persist throughout a person’s life. The severity of allergic symptoms, however, may wax and wane, and even temporarily disappear during a person’s life.

Atopic Dermatitis

This is typically the first sign of allergies and is seen in 10 to 20% of all children, frequently during infancy. Atopic dermatitis, or eczema, is characterized by itching, with rash formation at the sites of scratching. The rash is typically red and dry, may have small blisters, and can flake and ooze over time.

In infants and very young children, this rash involves the face (especially the cheeks), chest and trunk, back of the scalp and may involve the arms and legs. This distribution reflects where the child is able to scratch, and therefore usually spares the diaper area. The location of the rash changes in older children and adults to classically involve the skin in front of the elbows and behind the knees. Food and environmental allergies have been shown to worsen atopic dermatitis.

Food Allergies

Food allergies can occur at any age. Almost all people with food allergies will have a skin symptom, such as hives, swelling, itching or redness of the skin, as a result of eating the culprit food. These symptoms typically occur within a few minutes of eating the food in question, although they can be delayed up to a couple of hours.

Other symptoms of food allergies can include nausea, vomiting, stomach aches, diarrhea, breathing difficulties (asthma symptoms), runny nose, sneezing, and lightheadedness. In some cases, children can experience a severe allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening.

Nasal Allergies

Allergic rhinitis occurs in up to 30% of adults and up to 40% of children. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis include sneezing, runny nose, itchy nose and eyes and nasal congestion. Some people may also experience post-nasal drip, allergic shiners (dark circles under the eyes), and a line across the nasal bridge from an upward rubbing of the palm of the hand on the nose, a sign called the "allergic salute."

Asthma

Allergies are a major cause of asthma, a condition that occurs in about 8% of all people. Though it can occur at any age, it is most often seen in males in the pre-teen years and in females in the teenage years; asthma is the most common chronic disease in children and young adults. Sometimes asthma is difficult to diagnose in very young children, and may require a physician who is an asthma specialist.

Symptoms of asthma may include:

- Coughing — This can be the only symptom in some people who have "cough-variant asthma." The cough is often dry, hacking, and may be worse with allergic triggers and after exercise. The cough may only be present at night. Cold air may also trigger this symptom.

- Wheezing — This is a high-pitched, musical-like sound that can occur with breathing in and out in people with asthma. Wheezing usually occurs along with other asthma symptoms, may get worse with exercise and with allergic triggers.

- Shortness of breath — Most people with asthma feel as if they’re not getting enough air at times, particularly when they are physically exerting themselves or when an allergic trigger is present. People with more severe asthma have shortness of breath at rest or wake-up with this symptom during the night.

- Chest tightness — Some people describe this as a sensation that someone is squeezing or hugging them. Children may say that their chest hurts or feels "funny."

Many asthmatics have symptoms with exercise; this does not necessarily mean that their asthma is severe or uncontrolled.

Hay fever is an annoying condition that nearly 30% of Americans suffer from. It’s not serious but its symptoms can cause plenty of discomfort and inconvenience. It’s also not something you should treat on your own, especially if you’re basing your self-diagnosis on perceived symptoms alone. You’ll need a good hay fever doctor to help you manage and treat this condition. Here are ways on how to find one:

Look for a specialist
Hay fever is actually a type of rhinitis that results from an allergic reaction to pollens. It’s seasonal, which means you will suffer from it only on certain times of the year and usually during the same season. The allergic reaction comes as a result of inhaling airborne pollens. It then causes symptoms such as wheezing, coughing and runny nose.

If you have been referring your medical problems to a general practitioner, then you might want to find a doctor who specializes in allergies. These doctors are referred to as allergists and they are better trained than a general practitioner in diagnosing and treating your hay fever. Do this if your symptoms are especially bad.

A GP will probably be able to help you with your condition but it will still be a good idea to talk to an allergist. Allergists are specialists who have trained for at least two years in the understanding and treatment of allergies. They are more likely to have a better grip on what your problem is and can guide you on what to do.

Ask for a referral from your GP
Your family doctor can help you locate a good allergist. Allergies are quite common and your GP probably has a list of fellow doctors who specialize in their diagnosis and treatment.

Ask friends and family for referrals
If you have any relatives or friends who also have problems with hay fever, ask who their doctor is. It’s likely you’ll find someone who can help you with your condition if he or she is a doctor trusted by a close family member or friend.

Look for hay fever doctors in your area
Not every allergist will advertise on the Yellow Pages but it won’t hurt if you checked the listings. You could also find hay fever doctors in trade journals or through local medical clubs or associations.

If you want to check your hay fever doctor’s credentials, you might also try www.aaaai.org, the website of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. This site has a listing of practicing allergists whom you could get in touch with in your area.

Hay fever is common and easily controlled.

Hay fever is among the most visible signs of allergies, with sneezing, watery eyes (also called allergic conjunctivitis) and coughing the most common symptoms. Other more severe effects include headache, impaired smell, nasal and chest congestion, and wheezing.

The most common kind of hay fever is actually the condition called rhinitis, an internal inflammation of the mucous membrane inside the nose. Its primary symptoms is the runny nose.

Hay fever is basically an allergy to a variety of seasonal pollens. It gets its name from haying season, which typically lasts from the end of May through the month of June. Most of the pollens that cause hay fever are propelled through the air via wind currents, literally creating an atmosphere conducive to an allergic reaction. It’s considered easy to treat, with dozens of antihistamine and corticosteroid medications available over the counter.

Atopic and Contact Dermatitis are also very common and easily treatable

Atopic dermatitis (also called atopic exzema) routinely appears in conjunction with other allergic reactions such as sneezing and allergic conjunctivitis. It’s marked by swelling or reddening of areas of the skin. However, atopic dermatitis is non-contagious, and symptoms can fade and disappear over time. The symptoms often strongly resemble the outward signs of psoriasis. Atopic dermatitis is very common in children and even many breeds of domesticated dogs.

Allergic contact dermatitis, as the name implies, arises when the skin encounters something to which the body reacts. The infected area develops a rash or irritated surface area some hours after exposure to the allergen. Typical causes include poison oak, poison ivy, and also some chemical detergents and cleansers with a high nickel content.

Atopic and contact dermatitis should not be confused with contact urticaria, in which a strong rash arises immediately after contact but fades almost as quickly.

Preventing Allergies For You and Your Family

Creating an allergy-free environment for yourself and your family takes some technology, a lot of planning, and plenty of awareness. Fortunately, it does not take a lot of money.

Experts recognize that the best way to avoid allergic reactions is simply to avoid the substances and conditions that provoke them. Within the home, this can involve using air purifiers and high performance filters on air conditioning units.

Smoking remains one of the greatest dangers to allergies - especially those in children. Removing smoking altogether from your home and your car will greatly improve their air quality. Pregnant women should never smoke, as this presents myriad dangers to the unborn child.

Evidence suggests that breastfeeding increases a baby’s later susceptibility to allergies and irritants. Breastfeeding as long as possible also helps build the child’s immune system build resistance to respiratory diseases which can contribute to allergies.

Getting Tested for Allergies

Getting yourself and your children tested by an allergist will definitively disclose any airborne, food, and several other allergens to avoid during everyday activities. The tests are quick and mostly free of discomfort. A trained allergist or specialist will prick the skin with a variety of known allergens, testing for a response and monitor the results. They’ll then be able to formulate an "allergy map" describing the severity of any allergies on a scale of one to four.

Skin tests will not work, however, on patients with some kinds of skin disease or for those who have recently taken antihistamine allergy medication.

Various types of treatment medications work for various allergy needs.

The most famous type of allergy medications are long- and short-term antihistamines, which block the production of the histamine substance within the body. Most cause some form of drowsiness, though some do not.

Decongestants also work to prevent many allergy symptoms by shrinking blood vessels along nasal tissues. They’re typically used to reduce congestion that comes with moderate allergy symptoms. Side effects include raised blood pressure, irritability, and even sleeplessness and insomnia.

Combined medications offer much of the benefits of both antihistamines and decongestants. They may also combine side effects, however.

Steroids are especially useful for relieving allergy inflammation that results in many allergy symptoms such as sneezing and watery eyes. They must be taken regularly to have a positive effect, however, and may not show positive results for as long as two weeks. Side effects include weight gain and fluid retention.

Determining which treatments will work best for you and your family

Allergies, especially during the high pollen content months of spring and summer, are a great enough family health concern to consult your family doctor. Medication and removing known allergens from your living environment are important steps, and can be understood as the foundation of a healthier lifestyle.

Treating Allergies At Home If you have any allergies then the best treatment is always avoidance rather than treating the symptoms once they appear.

Treating Allergies With Acupuncture For allergy sufferers, medication is the only answer to relief.

Treating allergies with hypnotherapy While hypnotherapy can’t treat all allergic reactions, hypnosis, and self-hypnosis, can be used alongside medications or other complementary therapies to treat allergies.

Pursuing a greater level of respiratory and cardiovascular fitness is also a helpful form of allergy resistance. Improving the strength of these important body systems will help them stave off allergy irritation, reducing the risk of reactions.

Hay Fever can be an annoying medical problem if you suffer from it.

Hay Fever is also commonly called allergic rhinitis, and this is caused by an allergic response from your body to pollen and other organisms that are in the air. Pollen can not be seen, but it is present in the air most of the time. During certain seasons, organism levels can get extremely high in the air, and this can bring on severe symptoms of Hay Fever, but in some sufferers this can be an all year long condition. The severity of the symptoms will depend on how sensitive you are to the organisms in the air. If you are highly allergic, you may have symptoms all year long instead of just in the spring and fall. Pollen is not the only cause of Hay Fever, it can also be caused by mold spores, feather particles, animal hair and dander, dust mites, and other organisms and particles that can not be seen but that are present in the air you breathe.

Hay Fever symptoms can vary from one person to the next, depending on many factors including individual sensitivities, the levels of organisms that are in the air, and the number of allergens present. It is possible for you to be allergic to many different organisms at the same time. This can be a main cause of Hay Fever that occurs all year long. When you come into contact and breathe in these organisms, your body wrongly interprets this as an enemy and produces the allergic response to try and get rid of the enemy, which in this case is harmless. It is not the organism, but your reaction to it, that makes you miserable. Symptoms of Hay Fever can include sneezing, a nose that runs or is congested, coughing, eyes that may burn, itch, and water, wheezing and difficulty breathing, and others.

Hay fever and asthma are commonly found together, and this situation should be monitored carefully by your doctor because allergens can be a trigger for an asthma attack. Allergies can be determined by allergy testing but this can get expensive if a number of substances are tested for. In an allergy test, a small amount of the possible allergen is placed under your skin. If a red bump or swelling occurs then you are allergic to that substance. There has been some research and results with exposing patients to increasing amounts of an allergen to desensitize them to the substance, but this should only be done under the care of your physician because of the risks involved.
